Policies for Dartmouth Libraries Interlibrary Loan and BorrowDirect Services
What You Should Know
- All supplied requests are for personal and private use only. This includes any materials supplied electronically.
- It is your responsibility to adhere to all copyright rules and regulations. Please familiarize yourself with the Dartmouth Copyright Policy & Guidelines.
- All items are subject to recall at any time.
- All items are expected to be returned by their assigned due date.
- You're expected to monitor your email and respond promptly to any overdue or recall notices.
- Handle borrowed materials as your own. You will be held responsible for any fees related to loss or damage.
- Failure to abide by the policies laid out herein may result in the loss of privileges.
Our Loan Policies
- Interlibrary Loan (ILL) materials have due dates assigned by the lender, but eight weeks is typical.
- Renewals may be requested but require lender approval.
- Materials will be held at your chosen pickup location for up to seven days. After seven days, the item goes back to the lender. If you need an extension, please let us know ahead of time.
- We will attempt to obtain textbooks or materials on course reserve. However, we do not recommend relying on this service as they are generally in short supply.
- The external lending library determines fines for lost or damaged materials, which may exceed our standard $85 fine. Please handle borrowed items with care.
About BorrowDirect
- BorrowDirect materials are a single 16-week loan, with no option to renew.
- Search BorrowDirect first. It's the fastest way to obtain materials you may need for your research.
Our Electronic Delivery Policies
- You'll receive electronic material requests direct to your ILL account as downloadable PDFs. You will need software to view them. Some free PDF readers include Adobe Reader and Foxit Reader.
- We limit scanning requests for materials protected by copyright to 25% of the total page count (maximum 100 pages).
- Materials not subject to copyright have no set limits. Larger, multiple-page scans are subject to staff approval.
- Your account holds PDFs for 90 days. Save them to your computer if you will need them for longer. Once removed from your account, you'll need to request them again.
- We have no control over the quality of scans supplied from outside sources. If you have specific needs, please let us know using the "notes" field in the request form.
- We may be able to obtain e-books through this service. However, because of complicated licensing agreements, they're not always available. If we cannot source your request, we may substitute the electronic title for the same hard-copy one.
Alum and Interlibrary Loan
- If you are an alum with an active Dartmouth Libraries account and a NetID, you may use ILL.
- There is a minimum $16 charge for all filled transactions, including Document Delivery. We will bill you monthly.
View Your Old Request History
- Not all of your older items may be viewable in your account history. Occasionally, we purge older records from ILL to comply with copyright law's record-keeping requirements.
