State-of-the-art library storage facility, stewarding Dartmouth Libraries collections for the future

The Library Collections and Services Facility (LCSF) is a purpose-built, high-density shelving facility, opened in 2024. The facility provides archival standard conditions and environmental controls for library collections and Dartmouth's records. LCSF has a dedicated courier service that delivers materials from off-site to all main library branches daily.

The new LCSF is a critical addition to the Libraries’ infrastructure that will ensure the long-term stewardship and care of our valuable physical collections and records, not only for the needs of our current academic community but for generations to come.

About the Facility

Our facility boasts the capacity to hold 1.2 million items, equivalent to 8.5 miles of shelving at a height of 30 feet. We maintain optimal conditions with temperatures between 55-60℉ and relative humidity at 30-35% in the main warehouse. Additionally, a cold storage film vault is kept at 38℉ to protect our valuable resources.

Collections

Collections

The LCSF houses diverse collections, including general circulating materials, semi-rare volumes, multimedia collections, archives and manuscripts, and active records of Dartmouth. We are a shared storage space for all Dartmouth Libraries including: Biomedical Libraries, Feldberg Business and Engineering Library, Rauner Special Collections Library, and Jones Media Center.

We also are a strong partner with Records Management, serving as Dartmouth’s record center, maintaining active physical records of the college.
