Terms

  • Agreements in Humanities and Social Sciences: The open access landscape operates somewhat differently within these disciplines, and the Libraries are committed to making Humanities and Social Science research available to all. In light of this commitment, the Libraries participate in three “Subscribe to Open” initiatives for Annual ReviewsDemography, and MIT Press, and support the Open Library of Humanities.
  • Alternative Ways to Publish Openly: Archiving your published work on Dartmouth Digital Commons is another way to publish your work open access. Dartmouth’s institutional repository hosts a wide range of faculty, student, and staff scholarship, broadening the community’s research impact. Before uploading your work to the platform, check with your publisher about any conditions that might limit archiving on an institutional repository. Once you’ve obtained that information and are ready to submit, visit the submission page.
  • Gold Journal: In a gold journal, all published articles are open access and made freely available to read and download on the journal website immediately upon publication.
  • Hybrid Journal: In a hybrid journal, articles are available through subscription, but authors can choose to publish their article open access. What results is that within the journal, some articles are freely available to read and download on the journal website immediately upon publication and others are available only to subscribers.
  • Open Access License: Creative Commons licenses allow authors to both retain copyright ownership of your work and provide clear sharing and reuse permissions. Each license has a different set of sharing and reuse permissions, some more expansive and some more restrictive. Creative Commons provides a list of all available licenses. In the agreements listed, you will often be able to choose between a selection of Creative Commons licenses for your work.
  • Transformative Agreement: These agreements between institutions and publishers aim to shift the scholarly publishing business model from a subscription-based model to a publication-based model, enabling full open access. Names for these agreements vary, including “publish and read agreements”, “read and publish agreements”, or “open access agreements”.
