Workshops and Events Policies
To participate in a workshop, you must reserve your spot. If you're not a student, to confirm your registration, you must pay the class fee at the Circulation Desk in Berry Library by credit card or check only. You may reserve your spot in advance of payment, but you must pay before attending the session.
Registration
- Registration for a workshop always opens exactly two weeks before the class takes place.
- If the class is full, we recommend you join the waitlist. If someone enrolled for the class cancels their registration online, you will be notified via email that you have been automatically registered in their place as the next person on the waitlist.
- If you can’t make it to a class that you signed up for, you must cancel your registration online.
- To cancel, simply search for the confirmation message that you received when you originally registered; a cancellation link is included.
Our capacity is six people per Letterpress Class, and eight per Bookbinding Class, so we often have many people on the waitlist. Please respect the time of both the instructors and potential attendees and update your online registration accordingly.
Book Arts Workshop Cancellation Policy
Occasionally, Book Arts Workshop cancels a class or event due to bad weather or instructor absence. We will do our best to make a decision about canceling an event a few days before it begins. If Book Arts Workshop cancels a class or event requiring registration, participants will receive a complete fee refund.
Should a class or event need to be canceled, Book Arts Workshop will contact participants by email as soon as the decision is made. Please be certain that you provide us with all necessary contact information when you enroll in a class. Book Arts Workshop also posts cancellations on our website and Instagram page, so please check these sites for current class information.
Working with instructors and students, Book Arts Workshop will do its best to reschedule a canceled class on the next available date. If for some reason, a class is completely canceled, participants will receive a refund for the class.
COVID-19 Cancellation Policy
Participants in all classes are entitled to a full refund without penalties if you are unable to attend due to Covid-19, including sickness or exposure. Anyone wishing to receive a refund may contact us at book.arts@dartmouth.edu with the registrant’s name, email address and class title. A staff member will return your email as soon as possible.
Open Studio Policy
Overview
Open Studios are specific sessions, supervised by an instructor or student employee, when anyone can come into the Workshop and consult on a project, set type, print or make a book, card, or other paper-based item.
To work in the Letterpress Studio, you are required to attend one of our Letterpress Orientation sessions. No orientation is necessary for bookbinding, but some book structures are better for a beginner—and take less time than others.
No registration is necessary—you can just drop in. However, it’s always nice to get an email ahead of time if you have a specific project in mind — that way, we have time to get materials, resources, etc. ready for you.
Hours
We update our Open Studio schedule on the Libraries website. Printed schedules for the week are also posted on our doors and bulletin boards. Open Studio hours vary, as curricular class visits sometimes coincide with our schedule. During the academic term we’re usually open
- 3-9pm, Monday through Thursday
- 1-4pm, Saturday and Sunday
Always check the website to see the most accurate version of our schedule.
Project Time
Printing will take too long. So, if you need to print, set type or work on an involved book, you need to come in earlier or at another time. You almost always need to allow for a half hour for clean-up (so the studio monitor can close up). No one is allowed to work in the studios without a studio monitor.
If you can’t get to an Open Studio session until the last half hour, there are a few things you might be able to do in such a short time. These are:
- consulting about an idea
- choosing a type face for future type setting
- paper folding
- using our rubber stamps
- quick steps in bookbinding (gluing a spine, sewing a pamphlet, etc.).
Storage
If you can’t finish your project in one session or by the end of the term, we have places where projects in progress can be stored—but only with permission from a Book Arts Workshop instructor. All your work and materials must be removed by the end of term. However, when that is not possible or a project will go on for longer, you can get special permission from the Book Arts Workshop Program Manager.
Age Minimum
We are unable to accommodate children in our Open Studios or Workshops. The Book Arts Workshop is set up for people who are at least 15 years of age or older. Refer to the AVA Gallery in Lebanon, Craft Studies in White River Junction, or the Howe Library to see what kind of programming they might have.
