Experience, implement, and reflect on active learning pedagogy and practice at the Librarians Active Learning Institute.

LALI Schedule

LALI's facilitators design each multi-day institute around active learning principles and the LALI learning outcomes. Participants learn by doing and by reflecting, together, on what they have done.

The first two days of the program immerse participants in the theory and practice of active learning pedagogy. We learn about the brain science of learning, explore a piece of Dartmouth's history through archival sources, delve into instructional design, and become versed in LALI's principles.

On the latter two days, participants put their learning into practice through LALI's practicum. Selecting from a wide array of teaching scenarios, participants will work in pairs to design an active learning lesson that meets their scenario's learning objectives. The pairs will co-teach their sessions to their LALI peers, experimenting with new techniques and receiving thoughtful and productive feedback to build on.

Outside of program hours, participants will enjoy Hanover in the summertime, exploring Dartmouth's beautiful campus and enjoying local attractions such as farmers' markets, nature hikes, and cultural events.

LALI's Learning Outcomes

As a result of participating in LALI, participants will:

  • Experience and reflect on active learning pedagogy and practice
  • Explore methods for assessing students' existing research competencies and habits
  • Determine which active learning methods are most useful in a variety of library instruction
    scenarios
  • Explore tools that might be used to support active learning
  • Leave LALI with specific strategies for how they will incorporate active learning into their
    teaching
