The Dartmouth Libraries have long supported efforts to make scholarship publicly available.
Publisher Agreements
The Dartmouth Libraries support Open Access publication in a variety of ways, including through a growing list of negotiated agreements with publishers. These deals provide full or partial APC coverage for Dartmouth authors who publish Open Access. Through these and future agreements, the Libraries aim to foster a paradigm shift within the scholarly communications landscape that makes full public access to research the norm rather than the exception. Information about the agreements is available in the table below.
Unless otherwise stated in the instructions, these deals apply to current Dartmouth faculty, students, and staff. When submitting an article, always use your Dartmouth email address.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a transformative agreement?
These agreements between institutions and publishers aim to shift the scholarly publishing business model from a subscription-based model to a publication-based model, enabling full Open Access. Names for these agreements vary, including “publish and read agreements”, “read and publish agreements”, or “Open Access agreements”.
What is a gold journal?
In a gold journal, all articles are published Open Access and made freely available to read and download on the journal website immediately upon publication.
What is a hybrid journal?
In a hybrid journal, articles are available through subscription but authors can choose to publish their article Open Access. This result is that within the journal, some articles are freely available to read and download on the journal website immediately upon publication and others are available only to subscribers.
What is an Open Access license?
Creative Commons licenses allow the author to both retain copyright ownership of their work and provide clear sharing and reuse permissions. Each license has a different set of sharing and reuse permissions, some more expansive and some more restrictive. Creative Commons provides a list of all available licenses. In the agreements listed above, authors will often be able to choose between a selection of Creative Commons licenses for their work.
These agreements primarily cover STEM disciplines, what about the Humanities and Social Sciences?
The Open Access landscape operates somewhat differently within these disciplines. The Libraries are no less committed to making Humanities and Social Science research available to all. In light of this commitment, the Libraries participate in three “Subscribe to Open” initiatives for Annual Reviews, Demography, and MIT Press, and support the Open Library of Humanities.
How can I deposit my research in Dartmouth’s institutional repository?
Archiving your published work on Dartmouth Digital Commons represents another way to publish your work Open Access. Dartmouth’s institutional repository hosts a wide range of faculty, student, and staff scholarship, broadening the community’s research impact. Before uploading your work to the platform, please check with your publisher about any conditions that might limit archiving on an institutional repository. Once you’ve obtained that information and are ready to submit, simply proceed to the submission page.
