Connect with Library Staff

We're happy to answer your questions and provide reference assistance. This includes questions about the collections, making research scans of materials in the collections, and helping to identify items in the collections that are relevant to your work.

Scans

If you need scans of special collections materials, Rauner Special Collections Library provides both research-quality and publication-quality reproduction services. Unfortunately, we're unable to provide paper photocopies or physical prints of any materials in our collection. However, if you need paper copies of the scans, retail print shops or business supply centers can easily generate hard copies from digital files.

Research-Quality Scans

  • You may request up to 200 color PDF scans for no charge.
  • If you require more than 200 scans, you, or a proxy, are welcome to visit our reading room, where you can take unlimited photographs of the requested materials. Please email rauner.reference@dartmouth.edu for more information.

Publication-Quality Scans

  • You may request up to 20 publication-quality images.
  • If you need more than 20 publication-quality scans, please contact the Special Collections Librarian for Teaching and Scholarly Engagement.
  • You will incur a labor cost for each scan:
  • Dartmouth affiliates and federally-funded projects or organizations: $5 per scan.
  • Non-Dartmouth researchers: $20 per scan.

How to Request Scans

  • Submit requests in person or via our email.
  • If requesting publication-quality scans, please complete and submit this form to our email.

Please remember, the scans we supply are for your personal research use only. If you plan to publish images of materials in our collection and have questions about permissions, refer to our Guidelines for Publication Permission.
