Expanding opportunities for open publishing and global reach

Dartmouth Libraries entered a new three-year (2025-2027) Read-and-Publish licensing agreement with the publisher Elsevier that will expand Dartmouth authors’ options for open access publishing while complying with federal mandates for public access. Under this new license, Dartmouth-affiliated researchers can now publish openly in eligible hybrid journals without paying article publishing charges, while also retaining access to over 2,400 Elsevier journals through the Libraries.

One of the Libraries’ strategic goals is to significantly expand and promote public access to Dartmouth scholarship. Audiences across the globe will now have the ability to access high-quality research previously behind paywalls.

Susanne Mehrer, Dean of Libraries

The Libraries’ commitment to accelerating advanced research and amplifying Dartmouth’s impact across the research ecosystem are two fundamental principles informing the Libraries’ decision to sign a contract that reduces barriers to publication. Dartmouth Libraries currently have similar agreements with Cambridge University Press, the Institute of Physics, the Microbiology Society, the Royal Society, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. These agreements contribute to more sustainable, cost-effective pathways for open publishing.

We’re pleased to provide a new publishing pathway for Dartmouth authors while building on the Libraries’ existing open initiatives. Dartmouth joins with other research libraries to increase the amount of scholarship available to the global community.
