Visit the Sherman Art Library to study, research, and find inspiration!
Getting Here
Sherman Art Library is in Carpenter Hall and which is connected to Baker-Berry Library. For information about transit and parking, follow directions from Baker-Berry.
There are two ways to enter the Sherman Art Library:
- entering from North Main Street onto the main floor, Carpenter Hall, turn right to the library
- entering from inside Baker-Berry Library, follow the hallway along the Berry Library circulation desk.
Navigate the Library
Entering on the main floor of Carpenter Hall, Sherman Art Library has two beautiful study rooms with the Art Reference Collection and art journal display. Two floors below hold the circulating books and more quiet study spaces.
Main Floor
- Quiet study space in the Art Reference Room
- The Visual Arts Librarian’s office
- The Reading Room with a display of current art journals
- Color Greenprint station
Middle and Lower Level
- Circulating books and journals
- Additional study space
Art Special Collections
Want to view items from the Art Special Collection?
The Art Special Collection is a closed collection, which means items are not available for browsing. However, you can request to view any item from the Art Special Collection. Materials will be paged for you to engage with in the Evans Map Room.
How to Request
- Find materials to view in Library Search or through a consultation with the Art Librarian
- Log in to Library Search and while viewing the desired item select “Request Physical Item”, repeat if you’d like to view more than one item.
- You will be notified when the item(s) are available for you in Evans Map Room.
About Evans Map Room
- Evans Map Room is located in Baker-Berry Library. It holds maps and this is the reason why we view materials here, not in Sherman Art Library.
- You will need your Dartmouth ID to view your requests
- No food or drink is allowed
- Please use pencils only around art special items
- Please ask before scanning items
