Collection Development

We build and cultivate scholarly collections that underpin Dartmouth’s academic mission. Our priority is to provide current and future members of the Dartmouth community with access to a wealth of information resources in various formats. As Dartmouth’s research, educational, professional, and clinical programs evolve, we align our collections to support and anticipate emerging needs while navigating the ever-shifting scholarly publishing landscape.

Our collection development experts apply user-focused and thoughtful decision-making when purchasing and licensing information resources and incorporating access to collections through our network partnerships. Not only do these network partnerships expand access for the Dartmouth community, they also broaden access for the greater scholarly community by sharing scholarly materials and increasing open scholarship initiatives.

Collection Management

Careful management of the Libraries' collections ensures the long-term sustainability of Dartmouth’s rich intellectual history. We continue to thoughtfully steward collections, balancing the resource needs of current and future scholarship with consideration of digital and physical preservation, space needs, and environmental factors.

We leverage our library experts' deep knowledge of collection care, data analytics, digital preservation, disciplinary knowledge, and Dartmouth’s academic priorities to safeguard the long-term health and accessibility of the collections. Active, continuous management is essential to monitoring and maintaining the integrity of our locally held collections.
