About this collection

Gleb Semyonovich Shishmarev (1781-1835) and Mikhail Nikolayevich Vasil'ev (1770-1847) were officers in the Imperial Russian Navy. Their expedition of 1819-1822 explored the western coast of Alaska. These papers, from the Vilhjalmur Stefansson Collection, include correspondence from anthropologist Dorothy Jean Ray regarding her scholarship about early accounts of the expedition, a summary of the voyage by Vasilii N. Berkh (from the Chronological History of all the Voyages to the Arctic, translated from the Russian by Rhea Josephson), Karl K. Hillsen’s journal (translated from the Russian by Rhea Josephson), and Captain Shishmarev's article about Chukchi (translated from the Russian by Rhea Josephson).
