Accessibility

  • Letterpress activities can involve heavy lifting and a lot of standing.
  • Physical space in the Book Arts Studio is limited, and the space between walls and equipment can be narrow.
  • If you have questions about accessibility in the Book Arts Studio, please get in touch with the Book Arts Manager or Assistant Manager.

Studio Guidelines

Studio Guidelines

  • For your personal safety, remove or tie back any loose clothing or long hair while using a press.
  • Be sure to wash your hands at the end of work.
  • Please treat the type with care as the face of the characters can be easily damaged.

Fees

Students have full access to the Book Arts Studio for free! In light of increasing material and resourcing costs for Dartmouth’s ever-growing curricular and community engagement, some of our programs and events will require a materials and administrative fee for all other visitors. Fees are charged per 10 weeks Dartmouth academic term, or for one year after time of payment.

Materials

  • Paper is freely available for all projects. However, if you have a large project requiring a lot of materials, talk with staff about ordering your own supplies.
  • Tools and machines are readily available.
  • We provide aprons in the Letterpress studio.

Food and Drink

Please do not bring food or drinks into the bindery or letterpress studios. Water in closed bottles is fine.

Cleanup

  • Return all tools and materials to their proper locations, including any scrap or unused paper. Leave the studios the way you found them.
  • Dispose of hazardous materials safely. All blades should be placed in the sharps' container, and solvent rags should go in the fireproof box in the Letterpress Studio.

Bindery Studio

Please clean up after yourself every time you use the Bindery Studio. This includes:

  • Wash all glue and paintbrushes thoroughly, with water and brush soap.
  • Clean the tables of all scrap material, glue, and paint. Make certain there is no glue stuck to the table.
  • For projects that need to be left here, label it with your name, date, and contact information and store it in the temporary project housing area.
  • Remove all projects by the end of the term.

Letterpress Studio

Please clean up after yourself every time you use the Letterpress Studio. This includes:

  • Tie up your type at the end of the evening and storing it in the galley with a signed galley slip that has your name, font information, email, and date.
  • Clean the type and wash up the press. If you don't know how to clean, ask an instructor.
  • Return all cases to their original storage spaces at the end of every session.
  • Distribute (put away) your type and spacing materials accurately within two weeks of completing a printing project, or by the end of the term.

Our storage space is extremely limited; no one may carry over projects into the next term without the approval of a Book Arts instructor.
