BIOGRAPHY

Ann Morison (aka Anna Morison, Mariane Morison, also spelled Morrison) was married to Doctor Normand Morison, an emigrant from Scotland. Doctor Morison, of Hartford, Colony of Connecticut, owned an interest in two vessels, the Speedwell and the Unity, that appear to have been involved in the transatlantic slave trade. The Morisons owned several properties in Connecticut, and records indicate that they also enslaved at least 31 individuals. Given Morison’s involvement in the slave trade, it seems likely that most of these people were imported directly from the African continent. Doctor Morison died in a smallpox outbreak in Hartford in 1761. In 1762, Ann sold a family of three enslaved people—Chloe, Exeter, and their son Hercules (aka Archelaus)—to Eleazar Wheelock. Left behind in Morison’s household was a daughter also named Chloe, who later took the name Elizabeth Brown.
