BIOGRAPHY

Jabez Bingham, Jr., was born to Jabez Bingham (1724-1784) and Mary Wheelock (1728-1809) in Windham, Colony of Connecticut. In 1765, when Bingham, Jr., was 17, his parents sent him to live with his mother’s half-brother, Eleazar Wheelock, in Lebanon, Connecticut. Bingham married Mary Mitchell in 1779 and settled in South Hadley, Massachusetts. After Mary’s death in 1790 at the age of 28, Bingham married Abigail Brown Rowley Mercer. For the majority of his life, Bingham was employed by Wheelock, and he assisted in the move to Hanover, Province of New Hampshire, in 1770. In 1775, Bingham suffered an injury that left him unable to walk without difficulty. Despite this debilitating injury, Bingham still managed a team of horses and continued to trade goods for the College. In August of 1777, he wrote to Hezekiah Edgerton about sending an enslaved woman to Hanover to work as a cook. Bingham died at the age of 57 on September 5, 1804, in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania.
