Know My Name is an incredible work of bravery by Chanel Miller, who survived sexual assault by Brock Turner at Stanford in a case that is now famous. Miller was kept anonymous for many years, but this book is her way of telling the world her side of the story. I made this selection because I dedicated much of my time at Dartmouth to sexual violence prevention work, and by writing this memoir, Chanel Miller is standing up for survivors and sharing the deepest and most painful parts of herself in order to prevent the same violence–not just sexual, but the violence of disbelief and of silencing–from happening to anyone else. It is a powerful, albeit emotionally challenging read, especially for those who have experienced harm, and it is a huge beacon of hope for survivors to know that someone, somewhere, believes them.

At Dartmouth, I am a WGSS and SART double major. I worked in circulation at the Jones Media Center for three years. After graduation, I am working for a year as the Program Educator for WISE of the Upper Valley, an organization that supports survivors of gender-based violence in NH and VT. I will be teaching K-12 students about consent, healthy relationships, and gender stereotypes. After my year at WISE, I will be attending law school at UC Berkeley, with a concentration in social justice. While I am grieving the loss of my senior spring on campus and of our 2020 graduation, I have hope that perhaps this experience will teach empathy to those who previously struggled to imagine what it's like to feel isolated, whether physically, socially, or emotionally, from the rest of the world.
