During my time at Dartmouth, the arts have consistently given me a voice, a community, and lasting joy. I’ve worked at Paddock Music Library and performed in the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra since my freshman year, but the visual arts have also been a huge part of my undergraduate experience. As an English major, I’d always been interested in literary and visual narratives, but the Book Arts Studio and In Your Face! Zine introduced a whole new dimension of storytelling to me. Thanks to the wonderful staff and resources at the College, I came to enjoy comic-making, book-making, and small-press traditions such as zine-making.
Currently, I’m working on a graphic novel for my honors thesis in creative writing; after graduating in June, I plan to work in literary publishing and pursue an MFA in creative writing and cartoon studies. I chose Make a Zine because it represents the unforgettable artistic community I found during undergrad. I’m thankful for the people who helped me find a home these disciplines, and I hope that students will use this book to write their own literary-visual stories, speak their truth, and communicate with one another.
